Tips for Applying Ultra Durable Floor Finish

Applying an ultra-durable floor finish requires careful preparation, the right materials, and proper installation techniques. High-performance floor coatings such as epoxy, polyurethane, and polyaspartic systems are widely used in commercial and industrial environments because they provide excellent durability and chemical resistance. These coatings protect the concrete substrate from heavy traffic, abrasion, and exposure to chemicals while also improving the overall appearance of the floor.

The first and most important step in applying any durable floor finish is proper surface preparation. Concrete surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned, degreased, and free of contaminants before the coating is installed. Grinding or shot-blasting the concrete creates the surface profile needed for strong adhesion between the coating and the substrate.

Repairing cracks, patching damaged areas, and ensuring the floor is completely dry are also critical steps before application begins. Moisture trapped in the concrete can cause coating failures, bubbling, or poor adhesion over time.

Environmental conditions play a major role in the success of floor coating installations. Temperature and humidity should be carefully monitored during application because extreme conditions can affect curing and overall performance. For many coating systems, temperatures between roughly 60°F and 90°F provide the best application conditions.

Humidity levels should also be controlled because excessive moisture in the air can lead to bonding issues or surface defects during curing. Maintaining moderate humidity levels helps ensure proper polymerization and a consistent finish.

Another important factor is proper mixing and application of the coating materials. Two-component coatings such as epoxy must be mixed carefully according to manufacturer specifications to ensure the chemical reaction occurs correctly. Once mixed, the coating should be applied evenly using rollers, squeegees, or specialized applicators to achieve a uniform thickness.

In many flooring systems, a primer coat is applied first to improve adhesion and seal the concrete surface. After the base coat is installed, additional coats or protective topcoats may be applied to enhance durability and chemical resistance.

Allowing sufficient curing time between coats is essential to achieve maximum performance. Rushing the curing process can lead to surface imperfections, reduced durability, or premature coating failure.

When applied correctly, this durable floor finish delivers a continuous protection and beautiful high-gloss surface. It’s actually quite easy to install, but there are a few things you need to know about applying Smartgard in order to achieve the best results.

Preparing to Apply Smartgard Ultra Durable Floor Finish

Prior to applying the Smartgard ultra durable floor finish, it’s important for the floor to be completely stripped of any previous finishes, or it may be deep scrubbed and cleaned. The goal is to remove any debris and dirt. Next, the floor should be rinsed with water until there is no residue left remaining. It is vital that the floor is allowed to dry thoroughly. Do not attempt to move on to the next step until the floor is completely dry.

Next, apply two to three even coats of the Smartgard finish. Take note that the finish should not be applied by pouring it directly onto the surface. Instead, a plastic roller pan should be used along with a lamb’s wool or synthetic fiber applicator. Allow a minimum of 1 hour to 90 minutes between each coat of the floor finish. The amount of time to wait between coats depends on environmental conditions. No more than four coats should be applied within a 24-hour period.

Inadequate drying time between coats or heavy coats could result in dirt retention or increased stickiness. After a 24-hour period, you may apply another three to four coats, if you desire to do so. Smartgard should always be allowed to cure for at least 36 hours after applying prior to burnishing and may need to be allowed up to 48 hours to cure before burnishing. Full hardness of the product is achieved within three to four days. If you plan to burnish immediately, you will need to dilute Smartgard with water at a 1:2 ratio.
