Dairy facilities have unique needs when it comes to flooring. Milk, cheese, yogurt, and ice cream are all made from the same product but have very different handling needs. Pasteurization creates high temperatures while ice cream handling results in extremely low temperatures.

Dairy or milking barn floors may be constantly wet from water, milk, whey or other by-products. Multiple daily steam cleanings can subject the floor to thermal shock, which could create small cracks in a floor if it is not the right type to handle this type of hard use. As with any biological elements, harsh chemical degreasers will be used to ensure cleanliness, sometimes multiple times a day. The acidic nature of biological proteins means that the flooring is under attack from any spill.

The wetness of a dairy facility or spillage of fats and oils makes slip hazards a very real concern. Employees or animals that may be present must have a surface that is adhesive but not so strongly textured that it causes discomfort or wears away your cow’s or goat’s hooves.
