Moisture Mitigation in Concrete Using a Cementitious Urethane System

When you’re dealing with a moisture mitigation issue in a concrete slab, cementitious urethane systems have a high success rate. When a cementitious urethane is applied correctly, substrate moisture should have no affect on it. Cementitious urethane is also known as urethane mortar system. It is a type of floor system that is agreed to be one of the best for moisture mitigation. The urethane mortar system consisting of polyol emulsions and aromatic polyisocyanate is formulated into high performance flooring surfaces that are designed to withstand the extreme demands of industrial flooring.

The finished floors provide unmatched thermal shock and chemical resistance that can withstand the heavy duty sanitizing demands of food and beverage processing facilities. They also provide exceptional mechanical strength and abrasion resistance that can withstand heavy fork truck and wheeled traffic in manufacturing areas.

Cementitious urethane systems are designed for heavy-duty use. Because they are impermeable to water, they are often used in environments where there is a lot of water vapor, as well as facilities where the floors are subject to intense and frequent cleaning.

When the urethane mortar is created, it is applied over the concrete slab as a trowel applied mortar or very often as a self-leveling mortar. The concrete surface then bonds with the cementitious urethane to prevent any further moisture from going through it. Not only does cementitious urethane create a barrier, it actually creates a micro-thin layer near where it bonds with the concrete it is placed on top of. This micro-thin gap allows water vapor pressure to dissipate rather than build up.

Cementitious urethanes can be applied to old or new concrete or on grade or on a suspended slab. If the cementitious urethane moisture mitigation coating is to be applied to new concrete, color can be added. The urethane concrete system can also be blended with colored aggregates such as quartz or mica flakes.
