Installation of Self-leveling concrete over a plywood Sub-floor – Boston, MA

The following project was executed by  Tom Zilian of Madstone Floors from Boston, MA who created a polished concrete floor over a plywood substrate. In this project Tom had to remove old tile and install another layer of 3/4″ thick plywood.

All the joints in the plywood were seamed with a fiber glass tape which was then secured with a cementitious fast patch compound. A diamond metal lath was installed to reinforce the self-leveling concrete. Then he poured our Param 5500 self leveling concrete about 1/4 inch thick with a smooth finish. He used our Pellucid dyes for color and sealed the with one of our epoxy sealers and polyurethane U45 for a matte finish.

Please see below a standard method of installing Param 5500 over plywood substrate –

a. Plywood must be minimum 3/4″ thick, untreated, APA rated, Type-1, exterior grade plywood, OSB or equal. The sub floor must be free of deflection (L/360), considering both live and dead loads.

b. Prepare by sanding down to clean bare wood. Secure loose boards with deck screws and fill open seams with rapid setting polymer modified concrete. Replace any weak or water damaged wood.

c. Priming – Apply one thin coat of Paramol (undiluted) using 3/8” nap roller. Allow it to dry overnight.

d. Install diamond metal lathe…secure to the substrate by stapling or screwing every 6”.

e. Now you are ready to pour Param 5500.

g. Param 5500 can be colored with integral colors or Deso Dye. Request for samples.

h. Apply one coat of water based epoxy, Perdure E32 after spraying Perdure A03 (water based acrylic) followed by at least 2 coats of Perdure U45 (matte finish) or Perdure U46 (gloss finish). For high traffic areas, apply one coat of Perdure E12, 100% solids UV stable epoxy after applying Perdure E32.
