Few Tips on Polished Concrete Maintenance

Many industries around the globe are using polished concrete as a flooring option. Recently, a food store in Australia called The Rusty Fox opened in Melbourne with their floors made of polished concrete. Many retailers use polished concrete as their favored flooring option as well. Even the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia has reopened with polished concrete flooring.

Whenever a new place opens with polished concrete, one question a building owner or a facility manager should ask is whether or not these floors are being properly cleaned. The first time a polished concrete floor is cleaned, it is a good idea to use soap instead of other harsh chemicals. Soaps with a complete system for a polished concrete floor are preferable. It helps to find soaps with a certain amount of densifier, which is the product that hardens the floor when polishing. Harsh chemicals can eat away at polished concrete flooring, so try to steer clear.

Although spills happen frequently, you have a certain period of time before it’s too late to clean up your polished floor. Some of the spill can soak into the concrete and show signs of staining. A stain guard product could work to keep your floors protected from the potential of staining, if spills happen frequently in your industry.

Watch out for dirt as well. If you have a maintenance team, ensure that any dirt is mopped up quickly. Dirt can reduce the laminating qualities of polished concrete. This is where dry mopping can come in handy. Remember to use clean water to avoid more dirt from emerging.

Although polished concrete floors are extremely durable, it is still incredibly important to maintain them as much as possible. It is essential that polished concrete floors are clean without a spec of dirt. Otherwise, they can lose their reflectivity. This is especially important for industries who deal with the public on a daily basis.
