Decorative Concrete Basement Flooring Options
- Grind, Stain and Seal – Most basements we come across have concrete floor that are in good condition. They are flat with the typical cracks, but with minimal damage. Floors in good condition can be grinded with small, transportable, dustless grinding equipment. The purpose of grinding the floor is sand the top layer and open the pores of the cement surface allowing the stain in the next step to properly color the floor. After the floor has been properly prepared, it can be colored with stains and dyes. The result is like the images here with a natural marbleized appearance. Though there are many colors including reds, blues, greens and yellows, most people choose earth tones that easily match most interior walls. The final step is to seal the surface. We suggest our breathable epoxy Perdure BE58. Breathable sealers prevent trapping moisture in the slab allowing moisture vapor, common in basements, to pass through the sealer without delamination.
- Concrete Overlays – Skraffino is a thin concrete overlay applied over existing cement floors. This is a very popular solution for basement flooring and has been for years. Skraffino has been applied in thousands of basements, retail stores, office buildings, theme parks galleries and more. It’s economical, durable and ideal for wet environments. Some of our more creative contractors and artisans have used Skraffino in showers and pools with amazing results. For an economical application integral color can be mixed in, then two coats of Skraffino applied. Just like in Option 1 above the floor can be sealed with BE58 epoxy sealer. If you want to add design elements, saw cuts can be applied to create the look of custom tile.
- Self Leveling Concrete – If your floor is uneven or is damaged, has carpet glue or tile, our Param 5500 self leveler can be applied at 1/4 – 3/8 inch thick. Self levers can be colored and dyed just like our Skraffino overlays. The floor can be sealed with Perdure BE58.
- Moisture Vapor Treatment – For floors needing a moisture vapor barrier our Perdure MVT will provide the solution.
