The Challenge
Create beautiful, contemporary floors for a residential ranch home located in Lyon, Michigan. The project must be cost-effective and the installation must be achievable by a do-it-yourself homeowner. Additionally, the products used must be able to coat both concrete and gypsum-based underlayments.
The Outcome
A DIY homeowner was able to install beautiful, 3D, metallic floors for the basement and first floor of his residential ranch home with the help of Duraamen products, Duraamen instructional videos, and Duraamen technical support.
Overview
Mr. Kent Symanzik, a homeowner from South Lyon, Michigan, wanted to invest in his home by revamping the flooring. Because Kent owns a ranch style home with a basement he needed a cost-effective way to cover 2,800 sq.ft. of floor. (Basement: 1,200 sq.ft., First floor: 1,600 sq.ft.)
He chose designer metallic epoxy resin flooring because he knows it’s durable, easy to install, provides a beautiful contemporary look with many color options, and is cost-effective.

Installation
The Lumiere designer metallic epoxy floor system was directly installed over the concrete substrate in the basement. The substrate had imperfections repaired and was thoroughly cleaned. The installation consisted of applying a primer (Perdure E02) choosing colored metallic pigments (Lumiere Metallic Essence), mixing them with the Lumiere epoxy, then spreading the epoxy over the entire area with a squeegee. The coating was then protected by a polyurethane topcoat (Perdure U46).
The first floor has a gypsum-based underlayment over a radiant heat system. Radiant heat flooring is energy efficient and comfortable making it more popular than ever, especially with many types of concrete floors. Epoxy coatings cannot be installed directly over gypsum. Therefore the concrete-based microtopping (Skraffino) was installed prior to the Lumiere metallic epoxy is applied. Skraffino is the easiest to apply professional-grade concrete microtopping on the market.
