What Concrete Sealer Should You Choose?

One of the most important decisions when ensuring that a concrete job remains a job well done is choosing the correct sealer. A sealer is the final step that protects your concrete work from, scratches, dents, chemicals, and other issues. For many projects an acrylic concrete sealer is the right choice.

There are many types of concrete sealers including: acrylic, epoxy, polyurethane and polyaspartic. Every sealer is formulated for a specific use. Acrylic concrete sealers are water or solvent based, giving them advantages over other types of sealers.

  • Acrylic sealers are less toxic.
  • Acrylic sealers can be sprayed on with a typical sprayer
  • Acrylic sealers are typically less expensive per sq. ft.
  • Acrylic sealers are UV stable

The type of acrylic sealer you choose depends upon the types of protection needed and the desired final finish of your concrete floor. Therefore, choosing the correct acrylic concrete floor sealer is critical for the cost of the project, the finished appearance, and the longevity and durability of the floor.

Our acrylic sealers are engineered to last and extremely durable. Solvent-based acrylic sealers perform better in moist conditions. Some sealers sold in big box stores trap moisture which results in the floor finish bubbling and flaking.

Acrylic sealers can provide a satin or gloss finish. Solvent-based acrylic sealers provide a gloss finish, whereas, water-based acrylic sealers yield a satin finish. A satin finish provides a more natural, organic look.

By themselves, acrylic sealers provide a smooth surface and are not recommended for use in places where that present a slipping hazard. Anti-skid additives can be added to an acrylic sealer to remedy this. You may consider adding an anti-slip additive for areas like pool decks, sidewalks, patios, etc. Sealers with anti-slip additives still provide a natural attractive look while providing long-lasting durable protection.

The Highest Quality Acrylic Sealer is
Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) Acrylic.

Methyl Methacrylate (MMA) acrylic sealers possess super-high-strength molecular bonding properties with itself and the substrate to which it is applied. This gives it superior longevity while enhancing all kinds of concrete work. A concrete floor can last many more years before needing to be resealed as compared to other sealers.

Whichever sealer you choose, it’s imperative the manufacturer’s recommendations for application be followed. These recommendations were developed for the specific product. Not all acrylic sealers are created equal. Even if you’re an experienced contractor and have successfully used another brand or type of sealer, follow the directions on the sealer you’re about to use.

PRO TIP:

Rather than trying to save installation time by applying one thick coat, take the time to apply two thinner coats. When acrylic sealer is applied correctly you’ll be rewarded with the long-lasting benefits of protection from water, UV damage, oil, chemicals, chips, scratches, and anything else your concrete floor, patio, sidewalk, or deck might come into contact with.
