Flooring Options for Cold Storage Facilities

Flooring Options for Cold Storage Facilities | Duraamen Engineered Products Inc

Flooring for cold storage facilities such as dairies, laboratories, grocery stores, cafeterias or restaurants must be able to withstand cold or freezing temperatures, be easy to clean for hygiene, tolerate heavy equipment, be non-staining, non-absorbing and slip-resistant. That’s a lot to ask of any floor! If the floor in a cold storage facility can not handle these demands it is likely to crack or otherwise show damage and wear, which will compromise the integrity of the facility.

Specially formulated concrete coatings for cold storage facilities not only can meet these challenges, but can be installed at a lower range of temperatures than other standard concrete coating options. Typically the standard epoxy coatings will not cure or perform properly in cold environments, but Duraamen offers low temperature-curing, high-performance floors that help ensure these unique facilities are operating safely and meeting cleanliness standards.

Standard epoxy coatings installation doesn’t cure properly in cold environments, so the cold storage facility area must be emptied and warmed up. However, cold storage facilities need to remain cold, and are typically filled with things that can’t be warmed up. Polyaspartic and urethane concrete coatings are quick curing, even in chilly to very cold temperatures, meaning no loss of work time or income while waiting for a floor to be ready.

Cold storage facilities that have clean rooms need to be seamless. Typically, we recommend urethane concrete flooring system, Kraftig in cold storage facilities. Urethane concrete floors are resistant to sudden temperature changes, In other words they are thermal shock resistant which is a very important property for a flooring system in a cold storage facility.

a. Install Kraftig TG (trowel grade) or Kraftig SL (self-leveling) at recommended thickness.

b. Apply one or two coats of Perdure P72, polyaspartic polyurea topcoat with appropriate amount of non-skid additive.

c. If chemical resistance is desired then we recommend chemical resistant epoxy topcoat but polyaspartic polyurea offers fast return to service than epoxy coating.

Sometimes we also recommend epoxy mortar flooring systems in cold storage facilities and there are a lot of options within this category of flooring. We have formulated 100% solids epoxy coatings to withstand abrasion and chemicals and can be blended with aggregate to give an attractive, sophisticated appearance to the more public parts of a facility such as lobbies. This means your entire facility can use one type of flooring with the appearance varied in different areas. Skid-resistant textures and colors are also possible.
