When you’re talking about floors, MMA does not refer to “mixed martial arts” but it does mean a flooring system that is just as tough. Methyl Methacrylate resin based flooring systems offer that are quick to cure and extremely versatile.
MMA stands for methyl methacrylate. This is an acrylic resin and the system consists of a primer which goes over the substrate), a bodycoat (which could be very thin up to 1/4-inch thick), and a topcoat to seal the finished floor.
MMA resin-based flooring systems cure within two hours in temperatures ranging from -20 degrees Fahrenheit to more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit. These are excellent options for industrial flooring where quick return to service is a major requirement. Unless there is a very good ventilation, MMA floors are not suitable in occupied areas because they do give off a strong odor. However, their advantages outweigh this issue and when it comes to rehabilitating old and damaged surfaces, MMA is an excellent option.
As stated, MMA resins cure so quickly the facility can be back to accepting traffic within 2 to 3 hours. It is possible to install these floor settings in temperatures that are below zero and more than 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Industrial settings such as cooling chambers or when work must be done in winter when there is no heat makes no difference to these floors. MMA resin-based flooring systems do not degrade when exposed to UV light. They are resistant to organic acids, and lye has no effect.
MMA-based resin show excellent inter-coat adhesion. In fact, there is no mechanical preparation needed and the existing floor material does not need to be removed. The bonding property of acrylic resins is so strong that the coats bond to themselves and to the substrate extremely easily. Application of the fresh MMA resin creates a surface that the resin wants to stick to. And stick it does. Once the top coating is in place, almost nothing can affect this floor.
The resins create a solid, monolithic surface that has no cracks or seams where anything could degrade the surface. Maintenance is minimal with these strong floors. They are impervious and waterproof floors that liquids, solids, oils and other industry-related substances cannot have any effect on. If additional protection is needed, additives contributing to antimicrobial properties can also be added. Slip-resistance is customizable as is the thickness of the coatings. These floors can also be colored in a variety of ways utilizing colored flakes, quartz sands and pigments, which can be decorative or anti-slip.
MMA based resinous flooring work so well because of the chemical reaction called polymerization. Once the molecules are bonded to each other, they are unaffected by temperature and most other chemicals. MMA Acrylic resin-based flooring systems can be applied to concrete, asphalt, wood, metal and other materials. New concrete must cure before application and defects in existing concrete such as cracks and chips must be addressed.
