There are many reasons for this growth. Function and design are primary. Polished concrete floor coatings are extremely durable with numerous blends that solve height issues. Floors can be polished, stained and sealed without adding height to the floor. This is particularly important for projects with height issues at doorways and floor venting. Frequently tile, hardwood or carpet will present a significant height issue that cannot be solved without expensive remodeling, including replacing doorways and vents which can be a major expense.
In addition to concrete polishing, concrete overlays can be applied like in this project. DC Coatings used Skraffino, one of our most popular overlays. Skraffino applies at approximately 1/16th inch thick. In this project two layers were applied using our Nimbus Gray pigment for coloring. This produced natural variation like in granite or marble.
Skraffino is durable but with exceptional decorative results. The client wanted a high sheen accomplished with one of our 100% solids epoxy sealers. As you can see in the photos, the floor creates a very natural, simplistic appearance that is popular in urban markets like NYC, Boston, Jersey City and Hoboken.
There are other options including our Param 5500, a self leveling concrete that can be applied up to 1/2 inch thick producing a polished concrete appearance. One of the beauties of any decorative concrete floor is the design potential. Floors like this one are seamless or can be customized to look like tile in any size or shape using saw cuts. Borders can be added, patterns can be custom colored using pigments mixed into each coat with topical dyes and stains. Any result can be achieved including stenciled patterns and logos which are popular in retail, restaurants and office buildings.
